Waves of
Laughter to Hit Cranford This Summer
at The Theater Project’s
“Psycho Beach Party"
July 9, 2009 to August 2:
Thursday, Friday &
Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 3pm
“Psycho Beach
Party” is a madcap recipe of satirical fun, blending together
one part “Gidget,” one part “Beach Blanket Bingo,” one part
“Mommie Dearest,” one part “Spellbound,” and a healthy dose of
parody and camp. Directed by The Theater Project’s Artistic
Director Mark Spina (of Union), “Psycho Beach Party” centers
around a perky Malibu Beach teenager who wants to learn to surf
and join a group of beach bums. Complications arise when a movie
starlet flees the set of her latest rotten movie to hide among
the surfers. Soon, the wanna-be surfer girl’s secret is
revealed: she has multiple personalities.

Written by
award-winning playwright Charles Busch, “Psycho Beach Party”
debuted off-Broadway in 1987. Busch also wrote the screenplay
and starred in the cult classic film of the same name, which was
released in 2000 and starred Lauren Ambrose (currently appearing
in Broadway’s “Exit the King”).
The Theater
Project’s cast includes Harry Patrick Christian, Rick Delaney,
Christopher Johnston, Stephen Medvidick, Jen Ponton, Jenelle
Sosa, and BJ Thorne. The production is produced by Daaimah
Talley of Plainfield.
“This July,
The Theater Project is thrilled to be able to share another
Charles Busch masterpiece with our audiences,” says director
Mark Spina. “It promises to be another mad summer romp as we
celebrate kitschy beach party movies of the 60’s with a dash of
multiple personality disorder.”
Charles Busch
received a special Drama Desk Award in 2003 for career
achievement as both performer and playwright, having written and
starred in “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” and “Red Scare on
Sunset,” as well as “The Lady in Question,” which The Theater
Project previously produced in 2006. His latest play “The Third
Story” was produced earlier this year in Manhattan and
co-starred Charles Busch and Kathleen Turner.
Begun in 1994,
The Theater Project is known as Union County College’s
Professional Theater Company and is celebrating another season
of producing new works and contemporary classics. An
award-winning Associate Member of the New Jersey Theater
Alliance, The Theater Project is recognized for its color-blind
casting policy and provocative “actor’s view of theater” seating
where the audience literally sits on-stage with the actors where
the action is.
The play contains some strong language and
adult situations. |
