Emily Mann’s hit play is based on the book Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years, a New York Times bestseller compiled by Amy Hill Hearth containing the oral history of Sarah “Sadie” L. Delany and A. Elizabeth “Bessie” Delany.

At 104 and 102 years old, Sadie and Bessie Delany gained international recognition when their book, Having Our Say, spent six months on the best-seller lists. Their recounting of family stories about the changes witnessed by their family – from slavery through the close of the 20th century – vividly recalls the ongoing fight for racial equality in the United States.
